U9 Orange Division: Trowbridge Tn Cougars 1 CCCFC Whites 4 Print
Season 12/13 - Under 9 Black & White
The Whites secured top spot in the Orange Division table with victory over nearest challengers Trowbridge Town Youth Cougars.
With Trowbridge’s Woodmarsh ground both waterlogged and recently vandalised the match was switched to Combe, with the Colts needing to avoid defeat to make sure of the title in the season’s first phase.
The early signs were far from promising, however, and the rusty Whites found themselves behind when a fierce shot from the right flank flew past helpless keeper Max.
A penalty, awarded for handball, gave them a way back and Matthew kept his cool to slot the ball low to the keeper’s right to restore parity.
Despite Colts enjoying the majority of the possession and chances, the scores remained level until the game’s final quarter. And it was the Colts who finally made the breakthrough when Luke’s ball into the danger area was turned past the advancing Trowbridge keeper by Bradley.
The goal visibly lifted the league leaders and they laid siege to the Trowbridge goal in the closing stages. A parried shot led to Luke tapping home after great build-up play from energetic duo Tom and George and then Matthew iced the cake with a first-time blockbuster from Toby’s excellent pass.
At the other end, Max was confident and assured between the posts, although his workload was eased by some robust tackling and clearances from the battling Josh and Brandon.
The Whites finished the Orange Division season with five wins and a draw from their six games and won plaudits from all three of their opponents for their style of play and attitude. The boys did themselves, their parents and their coaches proud and can look forward to the exciting challenges – including the chance to progress in the League Cup – that await in the second half of the season.
